Come and see Black Excellence oooo!! Sculptor and Former Special Effects Artist, John Amanam, is creating hyperrealistic prosthetics for darker skin tones!
Hailing from Uyo city in southern Nigeria, Amanam has become a pioneer in designing Black prosthetics spanning from hands, legs, fingers, toes, ears, etc. John started doing work in prosthetics design after his brother lost part of his hand in an accident. His family quickly learned that dark-skinned protheses were not available in Nigeria.
“I was never interested in prosthetics before that,” Amanam told Hyperallergic in a phone conversation. “I simply tried to use my expertise in special effects to help my brother.”
Most prosthetics are made international and cater to clients that are primarily white. Finding prosthetics that match darker skin tones are extremely rare anywhere in the world. Amanam established his company Immortal Cosmetic Art 2 years ago and the demand has skyrocketed. Each prostheses is made by hand and the company has served nearly 200 customers from all over the world.
We know, John isn’t Yoruba but his work is TOO good not to share. It’s one love regardless, and we love all our Nigerian brothers and sisters no matter the tribe. 💛
